At the age of eight he began studying alto. In 2002 he finished the Professional Degree of Classical Saxophone. Due to the influence of saxophonists such as Stan Getz and John Coltrane he switched to tenor. That same year he moved to Barcelona to enrol at the ESMUC (Escola Superior de Músics de Catalunya) and graduated with distinction in 2006. Throughout his career he has studied with many jazz notables such as Jerry Bergonzi, Perico Sambeat, Javier Vercher, Dick Oatts, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Bill Mc.Henry, Chris Cheek, Mark Turner and Walter Smith III. 

He has also shared the stage with Jorge Rossy, Tom Harrell and Perico Sambeat among others and has recorded as featured sideman with relevant performers from the Spanish jazz scene like Roger Mas, Albert Vila, Joan Monné and Martín Leiton.

Santi de la Rubia is recipient of important awards like the I Barcelona Jazz Contest, the I International Jazz Contest of Granada,finalist at the Getxo International Jazz Contestand the I International Jazz Contest of Almería. 

In 2017 he received the award "La ruta del Jazz", awarded by the digital culture magazine Núvol, as the best jazz musician thanks to the release of his first album as leader ‘Broken Line’.

He currently teaches at “Taller de musics” in Barcelona.
